How to Gently Discipline

Boundaries with warmth — based on connection, not control.

Core principles

Discipline means 'to teach,' not 'to punish.' Behavior is communication — read the need underneath.

Connect before you correct. A regulated parent regulates the child.

Hold the boundary, validate the feeling: 'You really wanted to keep playing. We're still leaving the park. I'll carry you.'

Practical scripts

Instead of 'no hitting': 'I won't let you hit. Hands are for hugging. You can hit this pillow.'

Instead of time-out: time-in — sit with them until the storm passes.

Instead of 'good job': 'You worked so hard on that. How does it feel?'

When you lose it

Repair always works: 'I yelled. That wasn't your fault. I'm sorry. I'm going to take three deep breaths.' Repair builds trust faster than perfection.
